Century ranked #1 in nation; Continue winning ways
The Century College Wood Ducks are ranked #1 in the latest NJCAA III polls released September 5, and continued their winning streak with 2 more convincing wins last week vs 2 other ranked opponents (#15 Rochester CTC and #12 Central Lakes College). This brings their overall record to 11-1. The Wood Ducks didn't drop a set in the two matches and were very efficient in their play. #15 Rochester CTC was the first to go down on Wednesday, August 30, as Century swept the Yellow Jackets 25-18, 25-16, 25-20. Sophomore Kiyomi Callahan led the team with an all-around effort as she ended the day with 14 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Alexis Helmin also continued her hitting prowess with 11 kills on 19 attempts.
Against #12 Central Lakes, Century swept the match in 3 games (25-18, 25-23, 25-17). Century did a great job working around CLC's tall middle blockers with sophomore Jamie Ihfe leading the way with 10 kills and 2 blocks. Alexis Helmin and Kiyomi Callahan each contributed with 7 kills apiece and 5 blocks combined.
For their efforts, both Jamie Ihfe and Kiyomi Callahan were named MCAC Southern Division offensive and defensive players of the week.
Head Coach Jay Kam is happy with the way the team has been playing. "We have been getting contributions from everywhere on the team. Even when one player is having a down day, it's the next person up." When asked about the #1 ranking, Coach Kam stated "Its great for the program, but we have a lot of work to do to get better."
