Volleyball team off to 3-1 start!
The Wood Ducks volleyball team is off to a nice start to their 2021 season by going 3-1 at the Anoka Ramsey Crossover Tournament.
The first match on Friday, August 27, was against Mesabi Range College which the Ducks won in straight sets (25-15, 25-21- 25-19). Freshman setter Mackay Williams from Salmon, Idaho, led the team with 27 set assists and 4 service aces. Freshman outside hitter Alice Schneider from Nancy, France, had 14 kills, followed by freshman middle hitter Emma Crandell from Forest Lake, with 8 kills.
The second match of the day was a tough one against Central Lakes College. The Wood Ducks lost to the Raiders in 3 straight (15-25, 21-25, 18-25). The Ducks struggled to get any rhythm or consistency during the match. Second year head coach Jay Kam said, "Its hard to win when you get outscored 54 to 75. We struggled serving and receiving, and it was a main factor in the result."
On Saturday, August 28, Century College took on Northland Community College and Rainy River Community College. The Wood Ducks beat the Pioneers of Northland College in the first match in 3 sets (26-24, 25-15, 25-22). The middle hitters for the Ducks contributed big in the win. Freshman Emma Crandall (Forest Lake) had 11 kills while Freshman Kailey Mroszak (Forest Lake) had 10. Freshmen Keyera White (St. Paul) and Mackay Williams each contributed 4 service aces each. The Ducks followed the win by beating the Rainy River Voyageurs in 3 sets (25-21, 25-14, 25-16). The Ducks featured a strong service and receiving game, especially from Emma Crandell and Sophomore Greta Warmka (Grand Meadow). Kailey Mroszak and Alice Schneider led the offense with 10 and 8 kills each.
"It's only the beginning of many matches this year but I'm excited about where our team is headed. We not only have athletes, but great teammates and good people. Each of the players are special and bring something different to the team, and they are going to be successful both on and off the court."
Conference play starts on Wednesday, September 1, at 630pm where Century will travel to a tough opponent in St. Cloud Technical and Community College. Following that match, Century has its first home match of the year against another power program, Minnesota State Fergus Falls, on Saturday, September 4, at 12pm.
